Breast Lift With or Without Implants
Mastopexy
The breast lift procedure has several goals. The nipple areolar complex (NAC) is lifted up to a higher and more youthful, cosmetically appealing position. The breast is reshaped to improve appearance. Implants may be used to increase cup size and improve contours. Upper breast fullness is restored and the results are dramatic, with high client satisfaction.
Procedure
This surgery may be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. All breast lift surgeries are done at Dr. Payne’s MediCare and California state certified Pueblo Nuevo Surgery Center located within his office.
Short scar techniques are employed to minimize residual scars. Incisions may be hidden around the outer edge of the NAC, travel straight down from the bottom of the NAC towards the crease underneath the breast (inframammary crease or IMC), and sometimes be placed in the crease itself. There are multiple variations of these methods and Dr. Payne will discuss with each client what he thinks would work best for them.
Implants may be combined with breast lift surgery. They may be inserted under the breast (subglandular) or under the muscle (partial subpectoral). Implant options include saline and silicone. The outer shells of the implants may be textured or smooth and come in different shapes. Dr. Payne will discuss the pros and cons of all these choices with each client.

Results
Most clients are very pleased with breast lift results. Breasts can be cosmetically damaged by pregnancies, breast feeding, lifestyle choices, genetics and aging. Women often look quite good from head to toe except for small, drooping, deflated breasts that lack definition and shape. By lifting the breasts, recontouring them, and, if necessary, inserting breast implants, breast appearance can be dramatically improved. These operations can make women look and feel sexier, restoring the image of youth and fitness. Clients have increased self-confidence and self-esteem.
Most surgical procedures in plastic surgery are not permanent. Women who need breast lift surgery typically have thin skin, stretch marks, and soft tissue that is stretchy and loose and has decreased elasticity. The breast tissue is often spongy, compressible, and lacking distinct form. As time passes after breast surgery, the breast may stretch and lose some of its initial appeal. Implants can increase the tendency of the breast to stretch, especially in the lower pole of the breast.
Each client is anatomically unique, so it can be hard to predict precisely if future correctional treatments might be necessary. Dr. Payne likes to see all breast lift clients one year after their initial surgery, to evaluate results and discuss any possible touchup or revision surgery. Generally these are simple to do and if required can be managed with local anesthesia and virtually no down time. The overall goal of the one-year check is to enhance client satisfaction with the results.
After the Surgery
The recovery process is generally rapid. Most clients need only a week off work following the surgery. Gentle exercise can begin within a week and may progress to vigorous exercise within three to four weeks. Dr. Payne will provide each client with a detailed set of postoperative instructions as well as several medications aimed at minimizing discomfort. All clients are followed closely until they are well healed and back to normal.
