Breast Reduction
Reduction Mammoplasty
Plastic surgeons find the breast reduction surgery very satisfying because of the dramatic positive change it can bring about for clients. This reconstructive procedure can bring about both dramatic symptom relief and revitalizing cosmetic improvement. It accomplishes this by lifting the nipple areolar complex (NAC), reducing the size of the breast, and tightening and reshaping the breast. Asymmetries between the breasts can be corrected as well.
Procedure
This surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Payne performs this operation at the local hospitals and surgery centers as well as in his MediCare and California State Certified Pueblo Nuevo Surgery Center.
Short scar techniques are employed whenever possible to minimize the residual scars. Incisions are hidden around the outer edge of the NAC, travel straight down from the bottom of the NAC towards the crease underneath the breast (inframammary crease or IMC), and in the crease itself. The resultant scars fade over time, sometimes becoming nearly invisible. The great majority of clients do not mind slight scars, as this surgery allows for breasts that are smaller, better shaped, and more comfortable.
There are multiple variations of these techniques, and Dr. Payne will present each client with their individualized options after a thorough discussion.

Results
The results of breast reduction surgery can be very pleasing. While this operation is considered to be reconstructive, the combination of symptom relief and cosmetic improvement is usually dramatic.
Women with large breasts often experience considerable physical discomfort. Symptoms include discomfort in the breasts, shoulders, back, and neck, and frequent headaches. Bra straps may cut into the skin on the shoulders, and rashes under the breasts are common. It can be difficult to find clothing that fits properly, and physical exercise is often difficult or impossible. Many women are embarrassed by large breasts and may attempt to disguise them.
After a breast reduction, most clients find their symptoms drastically improved, and the cosmetic correction is usually very satisfying as well. Clients are more able to exercise, and clothing options usually expand. Clients look and feel better, resulting in enhanced self-esteem and happiness.
Most surgical procedures in plastic surgery are not permanent. Women who need breast reduction surgery often have skin and soft tissue that is stretchy and prone to drooping. Breasts may “relax,” influenced by factors including aging, genetics, lifestyle issues, and the use of bras. Dr. Payne recommends that clients wear a regular bra during the day and a sports bra at night to slow the stretching process and help maintain breast shape. Regardless of changes over time, breast reduction clients will never experience a return to their original situation.
Dr. Payne likes to see all breast reduction clients one year later, to evaluate results and discuss or perform any necessary touchup or revision surgery. If a client decides that a revision surgery will improve their satisfaction, revisions are usually simple corrections performed under local anesthesia.
After the Surgery
Breast reduction surgery is not particularly painful and the recovery process is generally quite rapid. One week off work is usually recommended. Gentle exercise can begin within a week and may progress to vigorous exercise within three to four weeks. Dr. Payne will provide each client with a detailed set of postoperative instructions as well as several medications aimed at minimizing discomfort. All clients are followed closely until they are well healed and back to normal.
